Inside Lewelyn Davis (2014)
The Coen Brothers made some terrific movies ,"No Country For Old Men", "The Hudsucker Proxy", "Fargo" and of course "The Big Lebowski" spring to mind but they've also spewed out a few turkey (imho) recently ("Burn After Reading", "The Ladykillers"), so upon reading that their latest opus was about a folk singer in 60's New York, I can hardly say I was filled with too much enthusiasm.
Thankfully I fears weren't realised, yes it all does get quite melancholy, and 15 minutes could have been trimmed from the running time (i.e some of the songs) but the film is filmed with choice characters, a bitchy cantankerous secretary in her 80's, Justin Timberlake as New York's cheesiest folk artist Jim Berkley (the hilarious "Please Mr Kennedy" is a scene stealer), Carey Mulligan at her angry and bitchiest best, and for good measure you get Coen brothers favourite John Goodman ("a folk singer with a cat, are you queer?), even the ginger Tom puts in a good performance!
